Wisdom Teeth Extraction For Saskatoon Communities
Our wisdom teeth reside at the back of our mouths and function as our “third molars”. However, in certain circumstances, they need to be removed to help preserve or repair a person’s smile. Removing these teeth is a surgical process.
General dentists are all qualified and trained to remove teeth, but if a case is more complex, they will typically refer a patient to an oral surgeon who specializes in these types of services.
If you require this treatment or would like to learn more about it, call our dentist in Saskatoon when your schedule permits.
Reasons for Removal
Patients tend to have their wisdom teeth removed between the ages of 17 and 25. We have a total of four wisdom teeth – two on the top and two on the bottom. While most patients have all four teeth extracted, some only need one or two removed, and some don’t need to have them taken out at all since they fit comfortably in their mouth.
Your dentist will let you know the details of your case by examining your oral cavity and taking several x-rays. If you need to have a tooth extracted, they will then discuss the steps of the procedure.
But why would you need to have your wisdom teeth removed in the first place? Common reasons for this treatment include:
- Overcrowding
- Impacted teeth
- To prepare for orthodontic treatment
- Decay
- Pain
- Abscesses or tumors
- Gum disease
- Sinus complications

Stages of the Treatment
Outlined below are the general steps involved in the procedure:
- Planning. When you’re approved for the treatment, your dentist will walk you through a personalized plan based on your needs and preferences.
- Anesthesia. To ensure that you don’t experience any discomfort, you’ll be given local anesthesia or sedation medication.
- Accessing the Tooth. A tiny cut is made into your gums to access the tooth. If needed, bone and any other debris are cleared away.
- Removal. Your tooth is thoroughly loosened and then fully extracted; dental forceps are used.
- Stitches. Stitches are used to close the incision site and help it heal.
- Recovery Instructions. Lastly, your dentist will give you instructions to ensure that your mouth fully recovers and that no complications occur. This may include taking Advil to manage any pain and avoiding certain exercises for a few days.
You may be asked to return for a checkup later so your dental team can ensure that everything looks good.
